I have a writing deadline overdue. So instead I procrastinate on LJ.
I haven't been around here much, and it worries me that I am going too long between updates on the boys, given my terrible memory.
BabySam is pulling himself up to stand. He is showing great mechanical aptitude for a 10 month old. When I unplug his carseat belt he was watching me do this and then he figured out to wait for that and then he grabs the belt and takes it off over his head. He has also been able to take off his bibs for while too, whereas Basil is only now learning how to take his shirts off. When playing with his big block cube Sam is able to put the blocks in the openings and he reaches in to take them out, feeling with his hands, doing what hubby calls "seeing with his hands" (that neither Bas nor I do very well!) And for months now he loves to open cupboards and drawers to take stuff out. He crawls over obstacles really well. I love watching him crawl, he is so agile and determined and it is the cutest thing ever to see him charge around on all fours!
It is maybe just me reaching, trying to find something distinctive for BabySam to excel at, because in general he excels in the areas where Basil is exceptional.
So it is less noteworthy - even his crawling was a week or two behind his brother.
At the doula's playdate on Saturday Sam appeared in his element socially - just as Bas as a baby was always outgoing and confident. Sam crawled everywhere and was friendly with everyone, esp the dog. But he does sometimes just want me, like when I pick him up from Jan, the sitter, he is anxious once he sees me to be in my arms and I can't put him down after that. It almost seems that now he even occasionally prefers me over his Papa if he is hungry. He still spends a lot of time screaming, and almost every diaper change and clothes change is an earbleeding nightmare. If I am holding him and someone talks to him, Sam will give a big adorable smile at the attention and then shyly bury his head in my shoulder.
Basil is doing well, there is some behavior regression now Papa is back at work 60+ hrs/wk, and we all miss him. Bas was sitting in his car seat beside Sam and Sam was wanting his attention, so squealing and kicking and grabbing for Bas. So Bas told him patiently, in the same voice we use to talk to Bas, "I am too tired to play now, Sam, I will play with you later." BabySam of course was unrelenting, so then Bas said, "Okay, I'll play with you for a little bit Sam, and then I will have a rest!"
Sam's super mobility means that their playtime is getting more frustrating for Basil. Bas can share his toys but Sam tends to want to have whatever is in Basil's hand. So sometimes Basil pushes Sam out of the way, or yells (Sam is very persistent and appears undaunted!) so we are working with Bas to find better solutions. Sometimes they can play together for quite a while. Usually with the legos, and since lemurbaby gave us his lego boards the legos have become quite the timesaver for me!
Baby Sam is 21.4 lb, 30inches long, head circ 47.5
