Just a quick update. We follow Professor Yaffle's advice and got Basil some boy-themed coloring books and allowed him to choose a new, less generic pen case (but he had to make do with his current crayons) and got this message the next day:
Basil had a great attitude towards his coloring. He even worked hard to stay in the lines!!
Have a great day!
So all is good there. THANK YOU everyone for your help. I am feeling less concerned that he won't be able to fit into a traditional classroom setting, it may have been just culture shock.
He actually talks very positively about his school and his teacher. He had been asking about getting back to school before the term started. I think there is a stability and structure to school that he needs very much, especially given that everything in his life has changed with the house move, and has de-stabilized him.
He is even more given to sudden fits of angry crying and wailing about how no one wants to play with him or people only want to play with his younger brother, and their competition has increased fiercely.
I think it is stress, and the stream of failed nannies coming through his life daily, and the fact that his parents are overwhelmed with work :( and low on patience.
